A Fisher Associates | Debt Relief

What is debt relief ?

As debt levels in Canada continue to soar, thousands of families across the country are struggling to make ends meet.

According to recent figures, Canadians owe $2.16 trillion, which as a share of gross domestic product, is the highest debt load in the group of seven economies – including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

From soaring credit card bills and the high cost of rent or mortgage payments to keeping on top of the cost of day-to-day life, balancing the books can be easier said than done for many, making it imperative to be aware of the debt relief support available.

There’s no one size fits all profile when it comes to those facing financial distress. Regardless of your circumstances, living with debt can be daunting; however, there are a number of solutions available that can turn your life around without getting deeper in debt.

Getting help

Most of us are embarrassed to talk about our financial struggles.  However; it is nothing to be ashamed of, millions of Canadians are struggling to pay their debts and make ends meet.

Admitting you’re struggling financially isn’t always easy, but it’s an important first step on your road to becoming debt free.

What debt relief solutions are available?

The challenge of managing debts and dealing with financial struggles can be very stressful; it can have a negative effect on your health and your relationship with others.  Fortunately, at A. Fisher & Associates Inc. we understand the options that are available.  We can explain all options to help you decide the best solution for you.

Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation is where you borrow money to pay off other debts.  You will replace payment to multiple creditors with one payment on your new loan.  Typically, the interest on a consolidation loan is less than the interest on your other debts.  Consolidating payments to multiple creditors into one loan payment makes it easier to manage your debts.  You have to qualify to obtain a consolidation loan and often the interest rate is high.  A consolidation loan does not eliminate your debt, but it does make paying it more manageable.

Debt Management

A Debt Management Plan, also known as a DMP, is an informal agreement between you and your creditors. This arrangement is set up and managed by a licensed credit counselling agency. A DMP is a flexible plan, which means it can be amended to suit your personal circumstances depending on your financial situation – offering the opportunity to increase or decrease your monthly payments.  Interest is typically frozen, but you will have to pay off 100% of your debts.  Not all your debts can be dealt with through a DMP; debts like taxes and students cannot be paid through a DMP.

Consumer Proposal

A consumer proposal is a legally binding formal agreement between you and your creditors that allows you to pay a portion of your debts, often as little as 30%, through a single, manageable, monthly payment.  A consumer proposal must be filed through a federally regulated Licensed Insolvency Trustee.  There is no interest on a consumer proposal and it allows you to become debt free by paying only a portion of your debts.

Debt Settlement

An option that allows you to come to an informal agreement with your creditors to pay a portion of your debt.  In order to be effective, all your creditors need to agree to settle the debts.  Additional fees will have to be paid.  Typically, you are required to have a lump sum payment available to settle all your debts.  Debt settlement companies are typically not regulated.

Bankruptcy

Applying for bankruptcy can sometimes be the only option for someone who cannot afford other debt settlement solutions.  It is a legal process that eliminates your debt. A bankruptcy can only be filed through a Licensed Insolvency Trustee.  It is meant for an honest but unfortunate debtor to allow them to become debt free.
