Debt Relief

Helping you decide on the best debt relief solution for your situation.

What is debt relief?

As debt levels in Canada continue to soar, thousands of families across the country are struggling to make ends meet. According to recent figures, Canadians owe $2.16 trillion is the highest debt load in the G7 – including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

From soaring credit card bills and the high cost of rent or mortgage payments to keeping on top of the cost of day-to-day life, balancing the books can be easier said than done for many. That’s why it’s imperative to be aware of the debt relief support available.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when you’re facing financial distress. Regardless of your circumstances, living with debt can be daunting. However, there are many solutions available that can turn your life around without getting deeper into debt.

Getting help with debt relief

Most of us are embarrassed to talk about our financial struggles, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Millions of Canadians struggle to pay their debts and make ends meet, so you’re not alone.

Admitting you’re struggling financially isn’t always easy, but it’s an important first step to becoming debt free.

What debt relief solutions are available?

Managing debts and dealing with financial struggles can be very stressful. It can have a negative effect on your health and your relationship with others.

Fortunately, at A. Fisher & Associates, we understand the options available and can help you decide on the best solution.

Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation is where you borrow money to pay off other debts. You will replace payment to multiple creditors with one payment on your new loan. Typically, the interest on a consolidation loan is less than the interest on your other debts and makes paying debts to multiple creditors more manageable.

Debt Management

A Debt Management Plan, also known as a DMP, is an informal agreement between you and your creditors, set up and managed by a licensed credit counselling agency. A DMP is a flexible plan which can be amended to suit your circumstances. Interest on debts is typically frozen during a DMP, but you will have to pay 100% of what you owe.

Consumer Proposal

A consumer proposal is a legally binding agreement between you and your creditors that allows you to pay a portion of your debts, often as little as 30%, through a single, manageable, monthly payment. There is no interest in a consumer proposal, and you will be debt free once the arrangement ends. A consumer proposal must be filed through a federally regulated Licensed Insolvency Trustee.

Debt Settlement

Debt Settlement allows you to come to an informal agreement with your creditors to pay a portion of your debt. All your creditors need to agree to settle the debts to be effective. Additional fees will have to be paid. Typically, you must have a lump sum payment available to settle all your debts. Debt settlement companies are typically not regulated.

Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is sometimes the only option for someone who cannot afford other debt settlement solutions. It is a legal process that eliminates your debt but will also see you give up assets like your home. Bankruptcy is meant for an honest but unfortunate debtor to allow them to become debt free and can only be filed through a Licensed Insolvency Trustee.
